Demand that Congress support the HELP Separated Children Act

Donald Trump and his administration are separating thousands of immigrant children from their parents by ordering the prosecution of everyone caught illegally crossing the border into the U.S. As their parents are sent to jail—even those seeking asylum—these “unaccompanied minors” are placed into government custody at immigration detention centers or into foster care.

This is inhumane. This is not what America stands for.

Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) and Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) have sponsored the Humane Enforcement and Legal Protections (HELP) for Separated Children Act. This legislation would protect the safety and welfare of these vulnerable children whose parents were arrested or detained by immigration authorities. Protections include allowing parents to make calls to arrange childcare and ensuring detained children can call and visit their parents.

“Children shouldn’t be suddenly abandoned at home or at school without information on their parents’ whereabouts, but we’re seeing that happen to kids with moms and dads facing arrest, detention, and removal actions,” Sen. Smith said.

“As the Trump Administration accelerates its cruel efforts to tear apart immigrant families at the border, it has never been more critical for us to protect the children who are impacted by the administration’s remorseless family separation policies,” Rep. Roybal-Allard said. “If we have any decency, we must work to reduce the pain caused to children by this administration’s draconian immigration reforms.”

Tell your member of Congress to denounce Trump’s policy of separating families and support the HELP Separated Children Act.
