(SAN FRANCISCO, November 7, 2018)—Need to Impeach Founder Tom Steyer released the below statement following Donald Trump’s request for the resignation of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions:

“The forced resignation of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has put our nation in an immediate constitutional crisis by jeopardizing the integrity of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. This investigation began because the country needs a full accounting of Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.

The guarantee of equal justice before the law is the cornerstone of our democracy. If Mr.Sessions’ replacement curtails, restricts, or aborts the Mueller investigation, he will have dealt a catastrophic blow to our constitutional system of checks and balances and the rule of law itself. Together with millions of Americans, I demand that members of Congress move to protect the investigation and start impeachment proceedings against Trump immediately.”

Steyer launched Need to Impeach in October 20, 2017, creating a powerful movement of more than 6.2 million people who he mobilized to help win back the House on Election Day. Over 4.6 million supporters turned out on Election Day, including a difference-making 1.9 million people who normally don’t vote during midterm elections. As part of his electoral work, 78,650 supporters hand wrote 1,645,805 notecards to infrequent midterm voters in 43 key districts to urge them to vote and held 7,312 house parties on impeachment and voting.
