In-district Campaigns to Include Paid Media, Door-to-Door Canvassing, and Town Halls to Show House Leaders that their Constituents Support Impeachment

(WASHINGTON, DC, Jan. 29, 2019) — Today, Need to Impeach Founder Tom Steyer launched “Operation Accountability,” a new campaign aimed at organizing the overwhelming grassroots support for impeachment in congressional districts across the country to call on Congress to start impeachment hearings immediately. The campaign will start in congressional districts represented by key Democratic leaders, and in each district, will include a dedicated paid staff person, grassroots outreach, a comprehensive media campaign that includes TV, digital, and direct mail, the activation of Need to Impeach’s 7.1 million supporters, town hall events, and public opinion polling.

“The American people understand that every day Trump is in office, Congress is enabling the erosion of our democracy and the rule of law,” said Steyer. “We are turning the widespread support for impeachment into a grassroots movement to give a voice to the millions of people across the country who know it is time for members of Congress to act on the demands of their constituents and hold Trump accountable for the sake of our country and our democracy. Our goal is clear: To get the House to start impeachment hearings immediately.”

As part of the campaign launch, Need to Impeach released new polling from Rep. Richard Neal’s (MA-01) and Rep. Jerrold Nadler’s (NY-10) congressional districts showing that Democratic primary voters in each district strongly favor impeachment and want pro-impeachment representatives. Voters in both districts feel strongly about this issue, with 90% saying they would be less likely to vote for their representative in 2020 if they continue to oppose impeachment.

The campaign will focus on House leadership members, starting with Congressional districts represented by Rep. Richard Neal (MA-01), Rep. Jerrold Nadler (NY-10), and Rep. Elijah Cummings (MD-07). Rep. Neal, Rep. Nadler, and Rep. Cummings are the chairmen of the Ways & Means, Judiciary, and Government Oversight committees, respectively, giving them the power to investigate the president and begin the process towards impeachment.

The first campaign will launch in MA-01 and will include:

  • At least 1,000 Gross Rating Points of TV in the district;
  • A dedicated paid staffer on the ground overseeing paid canvassers and volunteers to connect with voters and local elected officials;
  • Activation of Need to Impeach’s 7.1 million supporters, including over 20,000 signers in Rep. Neal’s district;
  • An impeachment town hall in Springfield, MA on February 12;
  • The release of poll results from Rep. Neal’s district about voter attitudes towards impeachment.

Earlier this month, Steyer committed $40 million in 2019 toward impeaching Trump, which includes a comprehensive public education initiative, town halls across the country, and organizing efforts to mobilize millions of new supporters to continue pushing their representatives to support impeachment.

Steyer launched Need to Impeach on October 20, 2017, with an initial  $40 million investment to raise the voices of people across the country who were angered by Trump’s presidency and policies. Within the first week, the group grew to more than 1 million supporters and continues to grow by thousands of people each day. Need to Impeach now has more than 7.1 million supporters and is growing by up to 30,000 people each day.
