(SAN FRANCISCO, June 21, 2018)—Tom Steyer’s Need to Impeach campaign and the Latino Victory Fund will begin airing a new national television ad today featuring audio of migrant children crying after being taken from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The 30-second ad, which will air in both English and Spanish, begins with the audio released this week by ProPublica and the words “What it sounds like in Trump’s child internment camps” over a black screen. Steyer then says that “terrible things happen when you leave a lawless president in power,” and calls on viewers to demand that members of Congress support legislation to keep families together.

“Donald Trump has lied to the American people time and again,” said Steyer. “This time, he is saying that he’s bringing immigrant families together when he’s really holding children and their parents hostage as he seeks his next political trophy to satisfy his base. Let me be clear, this president is unfit, this policy is un-American, and Republicans in Congress who silently watched as this tragedy unfolded will pay in the polls come November. It is my duty as an American to do everything in my power to ensure that these children’s cries are heard.”

Said Latino Victory Fund President Cristóbal J. Alex: “Congressional Republicans aren’t off the hook after President Trump’s half-baked executive action; they have a moral obligation to end the manufactured humanitarian crisis at our nation’s southern border. Latino Victory is proud to partner with Tom Steyer to hold accountable those leaders whose silence in the face of children’s suffering should disqualify them from serving the American people.”

Latino Victory Fund is a progressive political action committee working to grow Latino political power by increasing Latino representation at every level of government. The organization identifies, recruits, and develops candidates for public office while building a permanent base of Latino donors to support them. It partners with leading organizations to shape the public discourse to reflect the growing influence of the Latino community and build cross-constituency alliances that make us stronger.

Steyer launched the Need to Impeach campaign on October 20, 2017, through national television and social media ads. Over 5.4 million people have since signed on to support the campaign, creating a digital army that several political strategists call one of the most powerful political tools in the Democratic Party. Twelve other national commercials—including another in Spanish—have aired, reaching more than 2 billion television viewers and more than 454 million people through social media.

Last week, Steyer announced an additional investment of $1 million dollars, on top of the $2.3 million dollars he has already invested, in organizations providing quality legal services to immigrant families.
