The Trump Organization is embroiled in a lawsuit with Ossining, New York to lower the amount of taxes it must pay on a golf club in Westchester. The Trump Organization says the property is worth tens of millions less than Trump said on his financial disclosures.

Trump’s financial disclosures say the club is worth $50 million, but Ossining says the property is worth $15 million. Yet, the Trump Organization is claiming that the golf club is only worth $1.4 million.

Normally, towns settle tax assessment lawsuits because they are so expensive. But Ossining decided it would fight the lawsuit. One challenge the town faces is that the Trump Organization has significantly more resources than Ossining.

The Trump Organization has sued over its property tax assessment every year since 2015. If Ossining loses the lawsuit, they will have to pay back the Trump Organization almost $440,000 just for 2015.

Tax refunds pull from school budgets and other municipal funds. Briarcliff Schools, the district Ossining belongs to, is setting aside millions of dollars and other local offices have also reserved parts of their budgets in case the city loses the suit.

A Trump Organization spokesperson called the lawsuit “routine practice to ensure fair treatment.” There is nothing routine about the President’s company suing local governments. And there is nothing fair about Trump profiting from the presidency.
