It’s common for dictators to place their family in high-ranking government positions. Unfortunately, Donald Trump has taken another page from the dictator’s handbook: appointing his inexperienced, unqualified daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner as top White House advisers. For example:
- Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has ruled Equatorial Guinea since 1979, appointed his son Vice President.
- Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega won a landslide victory for his fourth term in office, this time with his wife as his vice presidential “candidate.”
- Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who led Angola from 1979 until last year, appointed his daughter Isabel to head state oil company Sonangol. She also controls Angola’s leading mobile operators Unitel and satellite TV network Zap.
- Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s ruler from 1980 to 2017, appointed his son-in-law COO of Air Zimbabwe.
Nepotism
By placing unqualified relatives in some of the nation’s most important positions, Donald Trump has put our country in danger and allowed his family and friends to profit off the White House, showing us the dangers of nepotism.
