Need To Impeach Update – April 3, 2018

Leading Off

Our newest video, “Kompromat,” features Need To Impeach founder Tom Steyer explaining how—and why—Trump won’t stand up to Russia. Please watch and share with your friends.

Manafort Update

Trump’s embattled former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, who has been a central figure of Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, is facing serious criminal charges, and has thus far refused to cooperate. The main thrust of Manafort’s defense is that his charges went beyond the scope of Mueller’s investigation. However, a newly released memo counters that argument, explicitly naming Manafort as a target. Could this mean that Manafort is next to plead guilty and cooperate?

It was also reported last week that a Trump lawyer may have floated the possibility of a presidential pardon if Manafort was convicted (and did not strike a deal with investigators). Amid criticism from both sides of the aisle, Trump’s legal team denied these reports, seemingly making a pardon unlikely, which may encourage Manafort to flip, considering the serious jail time he may face.

WikiLeaks Connections to Trump Campaign

Mueller now appears to have yet another target in his investigation: the Republican political strategist and one-time Trump campaign advisor, Roger Stone. Stone had claimed that he met WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, which itself has been one of Mueller’s targets. Though he has since walked that back, saying that it “was said in jest,” his inclusion in the probe could potentially lead to serious revelations. The DNC emails that were hacked and then released by WikiLeaks are a huge part of Russia’s election meddling and are likely the next subject of Mueller’s investigation.

Sinclair Broadcasting Group

The company that owns local news stations all over the country, Sinclair, has come under criticism after anchors all across their network read a script about the perils of one-sided fake news. Sinclair owns more TV stations than any other company and has been accused of being biased with a conservative lean. The bias is one thing, but forcing local news anchors to read scripts with a clear pro-Trump message is troubling to say the least.

If you want to get involved, an organization called “Meet Hope,” has made it easy for you to find and contact your local Sinclair-owned TV station so you can voice your concern and disapproval.

Take Action

We must tell congress that the Russia investigation has to continue, unabated, to its conclusion, and that they need to protect Mueller from this increasingly irrational president who is running out of advisers.
